Biography

Jutta Gutberlet, PhD

Professor of Geography, University of Victoria

Dr Jutta Gutberlet is a former member of the Board of the POLIS Foundation and continues to collaborate with POLIS. She holds a Biology degree from the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) and a PhD in Geography from the University of Tübingen, Germany. She worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and Ecuador, non-governmental research institutes (CEDEC in São Paulo, Brazil), and universities (Tübingen/Germany, Newcastle/Australia). Jutta is Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at UVic doing research on sustainable livelihood issues regarding urban and rural communities, particularly in developing countries. She teaches advanced qualitative research methods and in the fields of social and development geography. Jutta heads the Participatory Sustainable Waste Management Project based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is also the director of the Community-based Research Laboratory in the Department of Geography.
