Jutta Gutberlet, PhD

Professor of Geography

Dr Jutta Gutberlet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at UVic doing research on sustainable livelihoods and community-based development with specific attention to co-management and poverty reduction. Her focus is on issues related to quality of life, consumption and waste in Latin America. She teaches advanced qualitative research methods and in the fields of social and development geography. Jutta heads the Participatory Sustainable Waste Management Project based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is also the director of the Community-based Research Laboratory in the Department of Geography.

Jutta is a former member of the Board of the POLIS Foundation and has collaborated with and advised POLIS over the last decade. She holds a Biology degree from the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) and a PhD in Geography from the University of Tübingen, Germany. She has worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and Ecuador, non-governmental research institutes (CEDEC in São Paulo, Brazil), and universities (Tübingen/Germany, Newcastle/Australia).
